VOLUNTEER UNDERSTUDY INTERPRETERS enhance our program and prepare professional interpreters for performance intepreting. Interpreter Understudies work with the expectation, much like professional theatre, that they will train for a role in which they may never actually touch the stage, unless an emergency situation arises and they must replace a Performance Interpreter. They exhibit their skills and dedication to the craft in front of the production team and performers while learning from their specialized and trusted predecessors they serve to replace in the event of injury or illness. This is the entry level position for interpreters to advance into performance interpreting.
REQUIREMENTS
These UNDERSTUDY POSITIONS require music loving, highly movtivated, and committed interpreters(Interpreters NOT interested in Performance) (NOT AN INTERPRETER??). It requires the Understudy to prepare for every show they have been assigned, submit a 2-4 minute video performance, and to be familiar with terminology relating to the venue (stage & band names, and interpreting provider name and contact information.) It requires listening to hours of prepared setlists. It also requires becoming familiar with, and navigating through, the venue for on-the-spot interpreting team needs, including knowing locations on the site map, First Aid & ACCESS, stages, etc. The mental and physical demands for the position also requires the interpreter to be able to be highly mobile, negotiate outdoor terrain, endure heat & humidity, loud music, and aggressive & highly stimulating environments. In addition, the Understudy must be able to take direction, be a team player and have a healthy respect for boundaries. Understudies MUST be able to help team members, and available to the Liaison as needed. Understudies, training for Performance Interpreting, must have stamina and rhythm, like to dance, and be able to feel comfortable in crowded and stimulating environments.
Additional Requirements: Must be at least 18 years old. All roles require interaction with the public; volunteer must be professional, helpful and courteous in all communications.
COMMITMENTS
Time commitments are heavy for this position. All three days on-site are necessary for Festival Understudies. Pre-festival commitment to video, prep and listen to music is necessary. Understudy may contribute to Performance Interpreter’s prep material and will be expected to be present at all assigned shows.
PERKS
This position is extremely competitive and is the entry into our traveling performance interpreting team. Access to spectacular shows and complete freedom to roam the venue and watch shows at leisure during “off” hours and during breaks are just the beginning of the benefits received in this position. It is an invigorating experience while getting the most specialized training in this field. All positions receive no monetary compensation. A typical perk for volunteering is access to the event after a volunteer shift. Any credentials issued for volunteers grants access to public areas only (no backstage, artist, production, VIP or other special areas are included).
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
PERFORMANCE INTERPRETING is a different, more competitive position which requires a specialized skill set and criteria for application. Interpreters wanting to pursue this option must fill out the Performance Interpreting application.
